Plywood Bench
Here is another piece of furniture “experimentation” using my cheap material mantra. I wanted to see what would happen if I stacked up plywood and cut it in such a way as to show off the layers. I had real ambitions of gluing everything into blocks and then shaping everything into a more organic shape using a chain saw. I went so far as to take a chain saw to the top before realizing that I would probably end up killing myself AND tear up the blocks into something other then a usable bench. I am not saying that a talented person couldn’t use a chain saw, but I was not willing to learn for the sake of this experimentation. So I went looking for a better solution (for me).
Enter the 4-Inch Carving Disc! This little tool connects to a standard die grinder and acts like a mini chain saw. I could still inadvertently kill myself with this tool, but I felt that I had far more control with it. I was able to shave the legs down and round them out a bit. And I was able to cut the top back at a light angle to expose the layers a bit. I then did some aggressive sanding with my orbita, a bit of shellac, a clear top coat, and a bit of wax. I would love to revisit the experiment when I get the chance.
